NOW HIRING: Passionate People

When it comes to the recruitment process in the Advertising & Sales Industry, "passion" ranks in the top three prerequisites on my list. I fondly remember advertising for a sales position and receiving over fifty applications. Thirty-nine of those were persons with university degrees. One cover letter in particular, caught my attention. In it, the witty applicant wrote, "Can and will sell anything...except my soul!"

What a combination! Wit and passion. The candidate was interviewed and during the interview, I could tell that this person with only a high school diploma, knew she was competing in an arena of Bachelor and even Master's degrees. She had experience. She had basic knowledge. The others had experience. They had superior knowledge. 

She had passion. However, none of them displayed the same excitement for the position. It was down to one 'she' and many 'them's'. I chose 'she'.

One of my senior colleagues was adamant that my recommendation was flawed. In his opinion, she did not fit the bill, since the team was supposed to have a certain "intellectual attraction." I went against the thinking around the table and hired the passionate contender. Within two months, she became the best selling novel team member I've ever had. Yes, down to this day, almost a decade after that vacancy ad was placed.

Many have said this before: you can teach skills, but you can't teach passion. And I guess this is what differentiates living from existing - you "live" when you're passionate about existence. You exist when...well, you simply "exist"!
